MW Mobile Blog

For friends, family and the random search engine visitor. This blog started as an experiment in mobile blogging from my Palm TREO 600, 700, Prē, HTC Evo, Samsung 5, Pixel 3, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL. Now it serves as a simple repository of favorite activities. Expect bad golf, good fishing, great sailing, eating, drinking, adventure travel, occasional politics and anything else I find interesting along the way including, but not limited to, any of the labels listed here...

Last dinner.

Abalone ceviche and grilled abalone jalapeno cheese rolls for appetizers in prep for Kobe steaks, baked potatoes, salad, artichokes and a '94 Hafner Cabernet.

Picture by HDW. More extraordinary food porn from the ab weekend can be found at HDW's mobile blog.

New abalone experiment

Jalepeno cheese abalone rolls to be grilled for appetizers.

More abalone sashimi

The only way to get it any fresher, is to eat it underwater.

Abalone sashimi on the bluff

Enjoying abalane sashimi brunch at the bluff top. HW and MW limit out. Great conditions. Z did not dive due to alcohol poisoning.

After the climb out

HDW catches his breath after the climb out.

What lies beneath?

Great conditions, permitting some interesting underwater shots.

We waded in among thousands of what looked like small minnows...
... but this close-up does not help identify just what these critters might be.

Then worked our way through the kelp and seaweed...

... to find the objects of our desire.

Low tide in 30 minutes

Cove looks good. Good viz, calm conditions, and sunshine. What's not to like?

Dive Day 2

Low tide at 10, surf appears down from yesterday.

Alert the New York Times!

Zach picked a 10 inch plus Ab. For real this time.

UPDATE:
More trophy pics from HDW & special reply to the anonymous commenter on this post. Unlike some previous sloppy reporting by the New York Times, your loyal blogger has double checked all sources and independently verified all claims made in this post

It is hard to see in this picture,as the tape measure is not laying across the longest line, but after careful inspection I can confirm this is a 10 3/16" Abalone.

Zach proudly shows what he's got.

Group shot on the beach

Well. this was supposed to be a group shot, but HDW cannot both aim and operate the self-timer on his camera. Zach and I limited out, HDW got his first AB, and Zach got a trophy 10 3/16 inch ab. A good day to dive.

If you had chosen option A, I think the weekend would have been canceled :)

Excellent! The parameters I am working with - My brother Harlan lands at SFO at 11:30 pm Thursday night (5/8) and I need to put him back on a plane at Midnight Sunday night (5/11). After I pick him up, either
A) I bring him home, we get some sleep and drive up on Friday,
-or- to maximize the time -
B) I pick him up and we drive straight to the Ab Shack, Get a couple hours sleep, and then get him in the water for neophyte Ab training during the 9AM minus tide Friday.
I am - of course - leaning toward plan B. Saturday could be a one or two dive day, with minus tide early, and ebb tide in the afternoon. Sunday morning also is a possibility or golf if we have sufficiently decimated the Ab population. Somewhere along the line I am going to try and find a trout stream for him to fish. Maybe Friday afternoon. Can adapt to your schedule if you want to drive up together. I have not heard from Rick yet. If he cannot make it, I will borrow his Ab Slicer anyway. - mw

I can join you for May 9-11. SIgn me up!

We are three weeks into the season, and once again I have been remiss in my duties to notify my Ab buddies of impending minus tides. Nice Minus tides from Tuesday May 6 - Sunday May 11 - Excellent for teh Abalone OMT - Old Man Technique - and to ease back into our favorite life threatening activity.
My brother will be flying through SF that weekend on his way to a conference in Viet Nam, so I would like to introduce him to the joys of ablalone diving -if the AB Shack is available on May 9-10-11. Anyone else up for an Ab weekend?
I will be flying to Chicago on May 13 or 14 and on to Michigan for my annual fishing trip, back first week in June. Big minus tide that return week in June, but not sure if I can get up there then. Sigrid and I have been invited to stay with some friends in the South of France early June - so not sure how the timing will work out. Still working on flights for that trip.

Abalone and Marine Sanctuaries

My brother HDW is visiting and we will be Abalone diving and live blogging this weekend. There is a brewing controversy on expanding marine sanctuaries on the North Central Coast. It is probably needed to protect the resource, but exactly where and when will be a difficult and contentious decision.
Coastal controversy
"Outcry over state marine sanctuary plan that would declare prime spots along Sonoma, Mendocino coasts off-limits to fishing, diving
By DEREK J. MOORE
THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

Fishing has been a way of life in Arch Richardson's family ever since his ancestors used gold to purchase property on Sonoma County's northern coast.

But that 130-year legacy will vanish, the retired store owner said, if state officials move forward with a proposal to declare the waters off Stewarts Point off-limits to ocean-going activities.

"No more taking the kids fishing. No more getting abalone for dinner. No nothing," said Richardson, whose family owns nearly 5 miles of coastal land.

Stewarts Point is among several areas along the Sonoma and Mendocino coast under consideration for permanent fishing bans or other restrictions as a way of protecting marine life.

About 80 square miles from Santa Cruz to Mendocino County could fall under the most severe restrictions, including many areas on the North Coast that are beloved by abalone divers, fishermen, kayakers and others.

The state Fish and Game Commission will study four proposals put forth this week by a blue ribbon task force that was convened as part of the Marine Life Protection Act.

Passed in 1999, the legislation envisions a network of protected marine areas from Mexico to Oregon. Based on recommendations from another task force, the commission last year established 29 reserves along 110 square miles of the Central Coast from Half Moon Bay to Santa Barbara."
More on this in future posts, but this weekend, we are going to get some abs.

SF politics and city golf course drama continues

Apparently the Mayor prefers privatization, and the Parks Department is soliciting information for that path, despite the fact that the task force formed to provide recommendations about the courses has yet to report:
S.F. explores privatizing golf courses
Marisa Lagos, Chronicle Staff Writer
Tuesday, May 6, 2008

Desperate to improve San Francisco's aging and perpetually underfunded golf courses, city officials are quietly soliciting information from private companies interested in operating three of the city's public courses.

Recreation and Park Department officials said the request is simply one piece of a larger analysis that will ultimately help city officials decide whether to keep the courses, hand them over to private companies or close them. But members of a new task force charged with pondering the fate of golf in San Francisco are accusing officials of surreptitiously moving forward with privatization attempts, a controversial proposal in a city that is normally wary of handing over control of public assets to private companies....

19th hole

Bob 91
Roy 98
Mike 99
Roy had 7 skins, Bob had 6, I had 4.

A good day, although Roy made me putt some gimmies.

I don't know why I have that expression on my face, Probably because neither of these guys saw my great shot from 160 yards away in the right rough, hitting it over the 14th tee and drawing the ball around the tree on to the green on 18. It was Tigeresque.

BTW - Roy stiffed us by leaving too little money for his sandwich, then running out on Bob and me before the bill came.

Typical.

Roy has tree trouble on 18

Safely back on the fairway.

Traditional 17th Portrait.

Bob got the beer and two skins on 16

All lying 3 on the 15th green.

All 2 putt. Beer contest carries over to 16

Beer hole - playing for last beer

15th straight up. Winner of the hole gets the extra beer.

Sun is out finally!

Bob misses birdie putt - gets the par.

Bob tees off on 13

We all hit a tree.

Roy tees off on 12

after a sparkling birdie on 11.

At the turn

Roy 48 4 skins
Mike 49 3 skins
Bob 50 2 skins

Roy tees off on seven.

Safely in the fairway.

I miss anther birdie putt.

And the par.

Roy Faux Pas

Working on the golf course. Never should have let him buy an iPhone. Nex thing you know he will be live blogging the rounds.

Missing my birdie putt on 3

Got the par.

Bob tees off on 3

He is already complaining about the course.

Live Blogging Lincoln

first live blog of 2008. Threesome - Bob, Roy, MW. A little cold and gray today.
