The dock is out

even though it was not neccesary. My younger brother yells louder than me, so he won. Fortunately for all concerned, the shotgun was nowhere to be found.

Flushed six birds

No shots fired in anger.

fileted, fried and finished within two hours of being caught.

Marinated in Miller High Life, coated with Costco Seafood Rub, sauteed in butter and olive oil, served with garlic brown rice and Papa's famous eggplant/tomato salad.

It was very good.

And a 15 inch bass with the last cast

Last light

Today's critter challenge

I am looking for an ID of this guy crawling on the window sill next to my elbow.

UPDATE: 10/08/07 No definitive winner in the comments. Current thinking - Clearly of the Thomasidae "Crab Spider" Family, but undecided between the Genus Bassaniana or the Xysticus. I am leaning to Bassaniana.

Contrary to assertions

... made in a previous post, all sunrises have been canceled after the Cubs second playoff loss last night. However this is a better quality shot of the best sunrise so far, yesterday morning, when there was still some optimism and hope left in this world.

Better pics of Papa's pike

It is important to point out that this catch, combined with the spring Bass and Blug success, means that Papa is only one Walleye away from fishing for the complete Shag Lake cycle in 2007 - The Big Shag Grand Slam - Laregmouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Bluegill, Northern Pike and Walleye. Only five fishing days left to pull off this achievement.

per request...

On an earlier post, commenter "Harlan" asked what flies I used while fishing on the Escanaba. Here they are:
All three of these flies were used extensively on my foray downstream from lil' camp. I am not going to say exactly which caught the brookies. A fisherman has to keep some secrets.

Matt Lauer touts U.P. as fall color destination

Duh. As if we didn't know that ...

Travel Coach Kim Schneider is also writing about the U.P. color.

A colorful drive to the "peak"

The view from Brockway Mountain Drive

In this video clip, Today Show travel editor Peter Greenberg talks about his favorite fall color destinations, and Michigan's Upper Peninsula leads his report. Host Matt Lauer chimes in about the great mountain biking he's found in the UP. And they know what they're talking about.

This Absolute Michigan color tour of the Keweenaw Peninsula covers one of the country's most spectacular driving routes. At the summit of Brockway Mountain Drive, the highest American road between the Alleghenies and the Black Hills of South Dakota, watch for eagles riding the currents of the wind.

But the time head to the state's northernmost reaches is now. In today's fall foliage update, Travel Michigan reports color in the UP to be at peak.

Just don't believe what this Weather Channel report says about Traverse City. As the Travel Michigan update reports--and you'll easily see when you cruise the back roads from Charlevoix to the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula--fall color's a bit behind schedule. You can see hints of what's to come - and it's looking good - but the full show's not expected for at least a week.

The fry cook has breakfast responsibilities this morning.

Fried eggs, accompanied by fried potatoes and fried liver sausage. In a related story, this goes a long way to explaining why this odd couple arrangement is causing my health to deteriorate and is shortening my lifespan:
Spouses Copy Each Other's Health Habits - Yahoo! News
"We found that when one spouse improves his or her health behavior, the other spouse was likely to do so as well," said study co-author Jody Sindelar of the Yale School of Public Health. "This was consistent across all behaviors analyzed and was similar among both males and females."

Interesting factoid: In the U.P.

there is a new dawn every morning. Even after Cub playoff losses.

Resting up after traumatic Michigan government shutdown.

We sleep through Michigan government shutdown

The Michigan State government was shut down between midnight and 4 A.M. this morning when a budget compromise was finally reached between the Democratic governor and the Republican state legislature:

Mining Journal:
Government shutdown ends
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The state Legislature agreed early Monday to raise the income tax and expand the sales tax to services in a historic deal with the governor that quickly ended a partial state government shutdown.

For just over four hours early Monday, fewer state police were on Michigan highways, campgrounds were closed, road construction projects and lottery sales were stopped, and more service interruptions were on the horizon for later in the day until the final pieces were sent to Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm.

Applause broke out in Granholm’s office at the Capitol as soon as the final vote was announced at 4:18 a.m. The deal prompted Granholm to call off the partial shutdown of government that began at 12:01 a.m.
Like many of you, I was worried sick about this and barely able to sleep through the entire shutdown, even if such shutdown offered a few side benefits - like - an unofficial extension of the the trout season with the DNR not showing up for work. Still, a good compromise was reached, with some real spending cuts, and modest temporary increase in taxes to balance the budget. Looks like divided government even works better on a state level.

Oh wait.. wrong blog.

Much needed good soaking rain last night.

More showers today.
